HomeBlogLooking For a Mobile Home Deck? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know Before Breaking Ground

Hey there! If you’re living the good life in a mobile home in Chandler or the surrounding East Texas areas within a 45-mile radius, you’ve probably spent a few evenings sitting on your front steps wishing you had a real place to kick back. At ABC Decking, we’ve heard that story a thousand times.

I’m Aaron Baugh, the owner of ABC Decking. For over 35 years, I’ve been helping folks in East Texas turn their outdoor spaces into something they can actually be proud of. At ABC Decking, we’ve put a strong focus on mobile home deck projects because there’s a real need for quality, custom-built solutions that don’t just look good but actually hold up in our Texas weather.

Building a deck for a mobile home isn’t exactly the same as slapping one onto a traditional brick-and-mortar house. There are specific rules, structural needs, and design tricks that make a world of difference. Before you start digging holes or buying lumber, here are 10 things you really need to know.

1. Think About How You’ll Use the Space

Before you start picking out boards or talking about railings, think about how you actually want to use the deck. Do you want room for a large grill, a quiet spot for morning coffee, or a full outdoor dining area where the whole family can gather?

That vision shapes everything else. It helps determine the size, layout, stair placement, and how the space should flow with your mobile home. Starting with the way you want to live on the deck is the best way to end up with a space that feels right every day.

2. The Foundation is Everything

In Texas, the ground likes to move. We deal with clay, sand, and everything in between. For a mobile home deck, your foundation needs to be rock solid. Most mobile home decks use concrete footings, foundation blocks, or "pier and beam" setups.

If the ground isn't leveled and the footings aren't deep enough, your deck will eventually start to pull away or lean. We focus heavily on site preparation: clearing debris, ensuring proper drainage, and creating a stable base that can handle the weight of the structure plus a crowd of people.

3. Freestanding vs. Attached

I mentioned this briefly, but it’s worth its own section. Most manufacturers of mobile homes recommend that you do not attach a deck directly to the home. Mobile homes and decks tend to settle at different rates. If they are bolted together and the ground shifts, the deck could actually pull on the wall of your home, causing structural damage or leaks.

A freestanding deck sits on its own "legs" right next to the home. It looks like it's attached, but it’s structurally independent. This is the gold standard for mobile home decks.

4. Materials Matter (Especially in the Texas Heat)

For mobile home decks, we recommend high-quality pressure-treated wood. It’s dependable, durable, and a great fit for handling the direct East Texas sun when it’s built and finished the right way.

Whatever look you have in mind, the material needs to be rated for ground contact and outdoor durability, and a quality sealer applied on the right weather window helps protect the wood for the long run. We’ll help you choose a look that fits your home while sticking with a solid, proven wood deck build.

5. Proper Drainage and Sloping

One of the biggest mistakes DIYers make is not accounting for water. You don’t want water pooling under your deck or, worse, running back toward the foundation of your mobile home. We ensure the ground under the deck is properly sloped and the site is prepared to shed water away from your living space. This prevents wood rot and keeps those pesky East Texas mosquitoes from finding a new breeding ground under your porch.

6. Height and Accessibility

Mobile homes are often significantly higher off the ground than a standard patio. This means your deck is going to need stairs: and usually quite a few of them.

When designing your custom deck, we look at the "flow." Where do you want to enter? Do you need a ramp for future-proofing or accessibility? We also ensure that the railings are the right height and strength to meet safety standards.

7. Railings Aren't Just for Safety

While safety is the number one priority, railings are also where you get to show off your style. Sturdy handrails with clean, classic detailing give the home a more permanent, "resort" feel. A well-designed railing can take a basic platform and turn it into a beautiful porch that increases your property value.

8. Don't Forget the Skirting

When you build a deck onto a mobile home, you create a gap between the deck floor and the ground. To keep the look cohesive: and to keep critters like raccoons and opossums from moving in: you’ll want to plan for skirting that matches or complements both the deck and your home. We can design the deck so that the skirting flows seamlessly from the house right around the base of the new structure.

9. Budgeting for Reality

It’s easy to look at a pile of lumber at a big-box store and think, "I can do this for five hundred bucks." But once you factor in concrete, heavy-duty fasteners, railing systems, stairs, and the labor required to do it right, the price changes.

We pride ourselves on being upfront about costs. We want you to have a deck that lasts 20 years, not something that needs repairs in two. Having a budget is great, and as your custom deck builder, I’ll help you figure out how to get the most "wow factor" for your dollar.
